Winemaker's Notes: The cooler climate of the Carneros region allows us to produce a Merlot which is true to the varietal's characteristics. The longer growing season allows the fruit to reach maturity slowly, giving us fruit which is soft and elegant, yet rich and full flavored. Elegant aromas of boysenberry and black cherry join with nuances of vanilla and plum. These aromas lead to a soft and supple mouth-feel, rich with blackberry and toffee flavors. Hints of spice and cranberry are supported by moderate tannins for a smooth finish. Our favorite pairings for this wine include chicken cacciatore, Cornish game hen, and parmesan risotto.
|Wine maker notes
|Merlot’s finest qualities emerge in cooler climates and clay soils, thus it is ideally suited for the Carneros region, where San Francisco Bay meets the southern end of Napa and Sonoma valleys. The Rombauer family have long been fans of the varietal’s rich, silky textures and supple tannins, as well as its versatility with food. The first Rombauer Vineyards Merlot was produced in 1983.
The fruit for this wine comes from vineyards in the Carneros region owned by the Rombauer family and select growers.
|When founders Koerner and Joan Rombauer moved their two children, two horses and five dogs to Napa Valley in 1972, they arrived armed with an appreciation for the intimate relationship between food and wine. Their appreciation stemmed from Koerner’?s great aunt Irma Rombauer having authored internationally renowned cookbook the Joy of Cooking and his ancestors originating from the winegrowing region of Rheingau, Germany, where wine is considered an essential complement to a meal.
Appreciation bred passion, and Rombauer Vineyards was established in 1980. Thirty-five years later, the winery remains owned and operated by first- and second-generation members of the family.
