Wine Advocate 99 points - It?s hard to believe the 2003 Syrah Astralis Vineyard could be better, but it offers riveting richness, intensity, purity, and equilibrium. Structurally, it is similar to the Piggott Range, revealing abundant amounts of sweet, ripe tannin, and huge extract, richness, and depth. Meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to forget it for 5-8 years, it represents what Roman Bratasiuk and Clarendon Hills do so well ... show respect for the great traditions of France, but recognize the extraordinary raw materials that emerge from old vines planted in McLaren Vale. This fabulous wine offers both power and elegance, and showcases the extraordinary talent of Roman Bratasiuk. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030.

Despite being treated and managed in the same manner as all of Clarendon Hills’ vineyards, this one attracts global attention. This is due to its incredible expression, classic demeanour and timeless elegance. This vineyard was planted in 1920 on a 45º degree, ascending slope. It faces due-east and has a top soil layer of pebble-ridden clay and subsoil layer of pure ironstone. The site was once trellised, but now these stately vines are farmed as they grow, without trellising.

Producer
Charles Cimicky Wines bills itself as the 'red specialists' , producing rich, voluptuous, generous wines with superb balance. Charles' father built the original winery in the seventies and produced good wines through the eighties. In the early 90's Charles began to take a keen interest in winemaking and the 'good' wines started turning into awesome wines--the kind of wines people go nuts over. If you visit the winery today you will see gleaming stainless tanks, spotless floors, and a mega wall of brand new French and American oak.

Now in his late thirties, Charles is one of the most quality driven, meticulous winemakers in South Australia. This attention to detail appears to be paying off- he has won top gold in the Barossa Wine Show the last two years for making the best Shiraz in the Barossa Valley.
