Fourth and fifth generation winemakers Georg Jacob Keth and son Matthias work together in their cellars at Offstein. Keth's wines are offered in the First Class wine program on Lufthansa. Scheurebe was created in the Rheinhessen by German viticulturalist Dr. Georg Scheu in 1916. Those of us who came of age in a simpler time were told it was a genetic cross of Riesling and Silvaner. Current thinking is that the "Silvaner" in question was really a wild vine of unknown parentage. Somehow this fits better with Scheurebe's weird, stubbornly unconventional personality. It is the viticultural equivalent of the Prodigal Son. The Bruni "Scheu" hits all the right notes from this distinctive, exciting grape: intense grapefruit (pink grapefruit, more precisely) on the palate, mixed with a very agreeable greenish, minty leafiness. Frankly sweet from start to finish with 40 g/l residual sugar and modest acids, this is a fun, slurpable, offbeat wine that Siegfried and Brunhhilde used to enjoy on weekends with Panang Curry.
