When tasting a whiskey for the first time you want to
observe and analyze the different aspects of it before actually drinking
There are several steps to use:
1) Start with the appearance by holding the glass
against a sheet of white paper to judge visually how rich or light the
color may be.
2) Swirl the whiskey around and then watch to see how it coats the glass.
3) Nose the whiskey with your mouth open slightly so
that the alcohol doesn't dull your sense of smell and try to pick out
4) Take a sip and run it around your mouth so it comes
into contact with all your taste buds and see what flavors you
5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 to see if anything has changed
now that the whiskey has been in contact with the air for awhile.
If you and the people you are tasting with don't pick up
the same aromas and flavors that is perfectly okay because there are no
right or wrong answers but rather the individual tastes and aromas that
each of us is familiar with. If you like, after performing this
exercise try it again but with a couple of drops of neutral water in the
whisky to see if you notice any changes.

Our whisky this week is the Glenfiddich 15 Year Old which I tasted the other day for the first time in a year and was reminded what a really great everyday scotch this is. It drinks so much better then the price you'll pay
for it. This whisky is aged for 15 years in an oak barrel and then
transferred into a solera vatting system in which it moves through casks
that are always kept at least 1/2 full to maximize the flavors. The
nose has notes of fresh oranges and apples that progress to dried fruits
such as raisins and apricots. As you continue to nose it you will pick
up cinnamon and burnt sugars. On the palate you'll get vanilla from the
oak barrel and a great honey taste followed by cinnamon and spice. It
has a nice long finish that moves from fruit to spice on the end. I
think you'll agree this is a great "go-to" whiskey that should be in
your liquor cabinet and on your call list when at your favorite watering
The richly layered Glenfiddich 15 Year
Old single malt Scotch whisky is matured in three types of oak cask:
sherry, bourbon and new oak, before being married in our unique,
handcrafted Solera vat. The Solera vat is never emptied but is always
kept at least half full. Here, flavours are harmoniously married,
creating a whisky of character and intense complexity. NOSE Intriguingly
complex aroma with sweet heather honey and vanilla fudge combined with
rich dark fruits. TASTE Silky smooth, revealing layers sherry oak,
marzipan, cinnamon and ginger. Full bodied and bursting with flavour.
FINISH Satisfyingly rich with lingering sweetness.more
